Monumental Inscriptions from St.Lawrence's Church and Churchyard at Fewston, North Yorkshire
Monumental Inscriptions from St.Lawrence's Church and Churchyard at Fewston, North Yorkshire. All the available inscriptions have been fully recorded in 1978. Recorded, planned, and typed by G.Hardwick, a member of the Family History and Population Studies Section of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society. The earliest churchyard MI is 1613, No.88. The latest memorial date, (except for the war memorial), is 1936, no.149. burials ceased in 1896. (See No.34 MI.)
The plan was produced by scaling-up from an O.S. plan of 1:2500. Positions of monuments were sketched-in by means of ten-metre square grids, and accuracy is generally within one metre.
The church inscriptions are not indexed.
The churchyard MI's are indexed as follows:- Surnames (including masons and makers). Places (including .masons and makers). Makers and masons. Miscellaneous. (A daughter with unstated marital status, and who has a surname attached to her first name(s) different from her parents surname, is indexed under both names, the parents being additional.) Each MI has a number, followed by the style, H being a headstone. The number after the style of monument is a measurement in inches about the centre of the stone. Unless noted the stone is of a sandstone, and the inscription faces east. A name in capitals at the bottom right-hand side of an inscription, is the mason or maker. Parish Registers etc. have not been referred to.
