Major Extension & Refurbishment

Chapel Cottage, Stutton

Following the death in 1984 of Harold Atkinson the cottage was sold in the following year. To protect the privacy of recent owners of the cottage no names will be included from now on unless permission has been given. It was bought by a local farming family who owned much local land including the field which adjoins the cottage and Green Lane. They enclosed a small part of the field to provide a garden and parking area including a car port connected to the southern face of the cottage.

In 1989 a further new phase of the history of the cottage started. A major extension was added doubling the size of the cottage by creating a 'southern' wing and making the building an 'L' shape. The balcony was removed as the single storey extension was rebuilt and had a second floor added. A cast iron support pillar was used to open up the kitchen, this been re-used from the recently demolished Malt Kiln on nearby Malt Kiln Terrace. The extension added two bedrooms, bathroom, dining and utility rooms and a garage. The garden was also extended further into the adjoining field.

Shortly after the completion of the extension in 1990 the cottage was sold to a couple with a family who stayed until 1994 when it was sold again.

On the 4th November 1994 the cottage was bought by Bob and Kathy Hutchinson. They “had 10 very happy years at Chapel Cottage” and updated many of the rooms.
