Chapel Cottage, Stutton

In 1910 the Government ordered a valuation of all property and land. They were concerned that private landowners should pay part of the increase in land values that was attributable, not to their own efforts for improvements, but to expenditure by the state, for example in improved road, drainage, etc. A new tax was introduced, the ‘Increment Value Duty’ payable in certain circumstances at a rate of 20% on the increase in land value since the 30th April 1909. A baseline valuation of this date was taken between 1914 and 1915 and the records are held in the National Archives in London. Stutton and the cottage were valued like everywhere else. Each property was allocated a reference number plotted on a map and in field books which listed a description and valuation. The cottage was allocated reference 587 with the rest of Wilkinson Terrace numbers 588 to 598.

Listed as a detached stone cottage, two bedroom, a living room, kitchen, coal house and shared privy it was valued at £75. It was occupied by Isaac Ambrose and owned by David Smith of Leeds, who must have been the agent for the Wilkinson family at this time.
