HISTORY OF CHAPEL COTTAGE, STUTTON, YORKSHIRE 1875 - 1885

Methodist Boom Time

Chapel Cottage, Stutton

The Chapel and the Stutton Methodist Society had been prospering since the 1850s with between 20 and 30 members. It was always linked with the mother Methodist Church in Tadcaster who were also enjoying a large membership.

On the back of this boom time in 1882 the Methodists tried to purchase the cottage from the Wilkinson Family. John Wilkinson would not sell although his son Samuel would but was powerless at this time. The letters from both John and Samuel Wilkinson survive:

Dear Sir,
In answer to yours
and one I received from Mr.
Stephenson I have no inten-
tion of selling any property
at present. When I am gone
my Son can do as he chooses
and so could my late Uncle
if he wished. It would be
expensive to convery etc
if I change my mind I will
let you know when over
at Stutton.

Yours truly, most Respty

Replying to yours respecting
the Cottage at Stutton I shall

if my father wishes it

Again in 1884 they tried this time looking at some other property in Stutton, again a response from the Wilkinson's survives:
